Land Shark!

How cool is this, and why don’t we have these things in Ohio????

I keed. About the Ohio part.

Land Shark is an amphibious bus/boat, or Terra-Hydra, in Santa Barbara, CA, that my son would love! It takes passengers on a 90-minute land and sea adventure through the streets of Santa Barbara and then into the water along its coastline. Just imagine that thrilling moment when you are on a bus full of people, heading toward the ocean, knowing you aren’t going to stop!

I’ve been doing some research on Santa Barbara and it has ended up as one of my favorite CA. I’m not sure that a trip to CA is in my family’s budget right now, but here is a listing of family-friendly lodging if you feel the urge to visit–and you should!

The Bottle House

In my Audiology class, we were talking about the artist James Castle. In my typical way, while doing research on him, I came across another artist who thoroughly intrigues me.

Tressa Prisbey, known as simply Grandma to everyone, was a folk artist in California’s Simi Valley. She created an entire village out of bottles, cement, and other found objects. Her art came primarily from what others saw fit to dispose of, which only makes it that much more interesting.

Her story is not necessarily a happy one, but she made the most of what she had and made sure to enjoy the people around her. It sounds as if she was a real character, dying her white cat with food coloring to amuse visitors, and pointing out that, “Anyone can do anything with a million dollars… but it takes more than money to make something out of nothing.”

I think this would make a great day trip, or a stop on a trip to the L.A. area.

Another quickie blog to state how much I adore this concept:

Theater in NYC Public Restrooms

I love the creativity and the stretching of boundaries of what we as a society feel is art, use of space, and worthwhile entertainment.  Kudos to the creators of this play, the troop that performs it, and the government and people of NYC!

Game Swapping

Ξ March 20th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Travel and Fun Stuff |

For those of you who have kids who play video games, you know how expensive purchasing them can get. And how frustrating it is to see games that you’ve gotten them just sitting on the shelf because your little one has moved on to something new.

Well, why not consider swapping or trading the old games in for something new? With kids who have the attention span of an ant, once they tire of the old games they have something new on their list with which to replace it. That is why GorillaSwap.com is such a neat site. Simply put your old games in and swap them out for whatever it is that your child wants as a replacement. And save TONS of money in the process! Plus, it’s an excellent way to recycle and reuse, which is always important.

Make everybody happy–your little darling, Mother Earth, and you, with more money in your wallet!

The Green Festival

Ξ March 11th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Travel and Fun Stuff |

I understand that not everyone one is an earthy-birthy, crunchy granola vegetarian-type like me, but I do like to think that for the most part, people want to do their part to take better care of our planet.

So when I heard about The Green Festival, I knew I had to post about it here. For the three of you who actually visit this site. Heh.

The Green Festival consists of several “parties with a purpose,” beginning April 12 and 13 in Seattle. On May 17 and 18, the party takes place in Chicago. Starting back up on November 8 and 9, the festival parties in Washington DC, and then heads to San Fransisco to wrap it up on Nov. 14, 15, and 16.

Each festival will be different, as they will focus on the local community and what is working for the people and businesses in regard to healthier living. Keeping local economies strong while caring for the environment will be addressed by incorporating speakers, music, cuisine, how-to-workshops, and various other methods. Oh, and there will be organic beer and wine!

For more information, visit The Green Festival Site. If you end up making it to one of the festivals, please check back here and share your thoughts!

Shipwreck Beach

Ξ March 3rd, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Travel and Fun Stuff |

How cool is this? I come across the neatest places on the ‘net, all of which I want to visit!

This is called Shipwreck Beach, in Lanai, Hawaii. The vessel “is the World War II Liberty Ship whose hulk clings to reef close to shore. This particular vessel was not the result of an accident. After the war several surplus crafts were provided residence on the Lanai reef as an economical means of disposal. This particular vessel withstands the ocean currents and waves and has stood for over 50 years on the reef.”

Be sure to check out the next two pages for more pictures, and follow the link to Federation Camp on the second page. I just love interesting places like this. No swimming is allowed, but the view alone would be worth the trip.
